There is certainly no slowing down when it comes to chess tournaments in Gauteng. Not only are FIDE-rated tournaments increasing in the region but the prize fund is not too shabby at all and is likely to attract a healthy number of chess players from all parts of the country and even outside South Africa.

The Waterkloof Open Open Chess Tournament is coming up with Prestige Section (from 5th – 8th Mar 2015, Section A, B & C from the 6th – 7th Mar 2015 and Section D & E on the 7th Mar 2015. The prize fund for the tournament is a very healthy plus ZAR 25,000. You certainly cannot blame the organisers for not doing their bit to promote chess.  Johannes Phela Mabusela has already confirmed his participation in the event and there is little doubt that he will be one of the favourites to get the title.

All Sections will be rated by CHESSA, The Prestige & A section will also be rated by FIDE. Entries for this tournament close at 20:00 on Wednesday 4th March 2015. Entries for the Prestige Section close at 20:00 on Monday 2 March 2015.

Players with confirmed payments will be published 24 hours before the start of the tournament. • Chess players are requested to provide own clocks.  As can be expected for such a tournament the Latest FIDE and CHESSA rating rules will apply. •

Tshwane Chess tournament rules will apply. By the way this is the second leg of the Kasparov Chess Foundation (KCF) Africa Tshwane Grand Prix which offers ZAR 5000 for the best overall performance in the FIDE sections of Piet Robbertse, Waterkloof and Capablanca. This is a massive incentive for players to continue doing well in these tournaments.
